Change Course in Traffic
Want to know a great way to audit your personal behavior, check your motives, and change course in your everyday life? In a recent personal/spiritual growth challenge, it was suggested that I practice being the “un-Chris” – that is to act or react in an opposition to the typical.
After a three day test, it was surprising to recognize the patterns or ruts of life that had taken hold. It became clear that self-centered thinking was far too dominant, with deep roots in and around personal comfort.
Abide in Motion
The Holy Scripture is full of examples of individuals and nations acting in purely self-centered and comfortable actions, largely for the worse. In some cases this selfishness is corrupted beyond the mind (thoughts like covetousness) to the core of a wickedly inspired heart (committing the murder of a brother) – and manifest beyond thoughts and lead to actions!
The Holy Spirit breathed words of Galatians 5:22-23 help followers of Christ to recognize the byproduct of holy living by abiding in Him.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
The “un-Chris” challenge revealed the branches (traits) of my life that bore no good fruit – and needed to be cut off entirely (not to be confused with a pruning John 15:1-2).
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.”
Imitation Comfort to True Comfort
It is time to take inventory – as individual followers of Christ. As husbands and wives, as brothers in sisters, as family, as children of God. Everyday relationships, even in virtual or distant connection – we can come to recognize where the Lord wants to cut-off or prune the branches of our lives.
The beauty of the fruit produced in our lives will ultimately reflect the glory of our Lord and Savior. Start small, move from comfort to un-comfort and you will begin to discover true joy, peace, and love.
I am ever thankful for my brother-in-Christ and good friend, John Mizerak. It was John who challenged me to unpack the “un-Chris” and for that I am grateful. Not only did his prompt help me to recognize and begin to break off the dead branches, but help me to share this episode with hopes you too will ask, seek and knock – and discover the good fruit that the Lord has in store for your life.
